Sneak a Peek with the Peach: The Elementary Darling

Hey Friends! It's Erin from The Elementary Darling!

Who is back to school? Who is exhausted from back to school? I am finally getting over the exhaustion and getting back into the regular swing of things. I am loving my kiddos and cleaning up my space in my classroom!

Today I am here for our September Sneak a Peek special! Let's take a look into my classroom and visit my Teacher Desk :)

Today I am focusing on my desk area. A LOT happens here. My computer is there,as well as my papers, and binders. I also conference there for writer's workshop, math groups, and daily five. I am not that teacher that can give up her desk.

This is my computer desk. In here I house the printer, ELMO, math group binder, writer's workshop binder, and Daily five Reading Groups binder.

This is the view behind my desk with my caddies for my groups and other binder organization. #realtalk the trash needs to be taken out!

This is the view from my chair to the right. I have my brag tag organization, the "graded papers" organization, my Monday-Friday paper organization and where I keep my construction paper and astrobrights paper.

Front view of my desk and stools for students, my teacher/author's chair, and bookshelf.

What is a favorite part of your classroom? Let me know in the comments!

Sneak a Peek with a Peach: Teaching with Crayons and Curls

Hey y'all! I can't even begin to tell you how excited I am about this little series we've got going on here at The Primary Peach! One of my favorite things about being a teacher is decorating my classroom. And, {even more} I love looking at other classrooms for great ideas to incorporate into my own!

I wanted to share one of my favorite spots in my classroom, my Classroom Library. Since I'm co-teaching this year, I am so fortunate to have two classrooms worth of space- it's a huge space! Our Classroom Library is on my side of our classroom and we were able to make it a pretty large spot!

One of the very first things we realized when setting up our classroom, is we have A LOT of books, like a ton! This picture only shows half of the books in our reading center! There are 2 more bookshelves full of books!

I created the "READ" letters last summer and loved that I could still incorporate them into our new classroom! They were a cheap and easy DIY project that adds the perfect touch to my reading center!

Our library is split into different sections. This particular shelf holds the leveled books. The other shelves have books cateorgized into genres, favorite characters, etc. We spend a lot of time going over finding Just Right books so that students can book shop on any shelf!

I created these labels to help organize our library! They really help the kids know where to put their books back when they go book shopping each week.

I use the small magazine rack shelf to display books that we read throughout the month AND special holiday books! Right now it is full of Back to School books!

One of my favorite TPT purchases has been the Quote Posters from Blair Turner at One Lesson at a Time! I purchased both the color and black and white versions, and they have found their place all over our classroom! I just LOVE motivational quotes and they add so much to our decor!

Thank you for joining me today! Make sure to check back each day for a visit into each of our classrooms!

Sneak a Peek with a Peach: Mandy's Tips for Teachers

Today is the FIRST of a 22 part (!!) installment of Sneak a Peek with a Peach!  Each author from the Primary Peach will share a tour of their classroom or a specific area of their classroom.   So, grab a drink and a snack and let's get started!!!!

I am in a little bit of a different position than some of our Peaches.  I am no longer in the classroom and I am currently a stay-at-home mommy.  While lots of learning happens around our kitchen table, it doesn't have quite the same affect as a classroom reveal! LOL! I have decided to share my most favorite area of my past classrooms: the library! So we are going to climb into our DeLorean and time travel a bit!

This was my VERY FIRST classroom.  Ah, the nostalgia! You can tell from the quality of the picture that this was the Dark Ages. I was a rookie- and it showed.  Look at the arrangement of the library!  See the arrows? They are pointing to my CLOSED OFF library! Eek! Hiding places behind the bookshelves? I wanted a cozy little nook and created it with bookshelves....that hid the teacher's view. What was I thinking?  Apparently, my first year, not much. Luckily, I was a fast learner! This arrangement didn't last too long. LOL!

A few years later I moved in to a double wide trailer. Space was at a premium.  I had all kinds of things hidden and stuffed into corners!!  The arrow points to my library. The chairs were stacked in the library after school- they were not there during the school day!  You can tell I learned here!  Still a nook, but always in my view.

I moved (again) and you can tell my library really expanded that year.  I have always loved children's book and I hoard them.  Even now! I kept recess games in the steamer trunk and pillows for kids to snuggle up with.  The little rug was shaped like a school bus and I adored it. I also adored lamination!  Holy smokes! Look at all those laminated posters! I will say, we DID create those charts as a class and then I laminated them. Most of the charts are from the Guiding Readers and Writers by Fountas and Pinnell's First 20 Days plans.

I loved again this year and changed grades.  This was my first year in second grade and I adored it.  This was one of my most favorite groups of kids ever. These kids are now in HIGH SCHOOL!  Eek!

This view is from the classroom door. I decided to make the library line the classroom meeting area in front of the easel. This idea was okay.  I will say, for the most part, my kids didn't play in the book baskets during whole group lessons.  However, this was a great group of kids.  When I lined the meeting area with our books other years, it did cause problems.

This was also the year I revamped my library organization. I wanted to make sure my little second graders could maintain the library and color coded it.   You can read about that here and get a copy of the labels for free! The kids were able to keep up with the library and it actually worked well enough that I kept this system up for several years.

I loved those blue shelves. They were hand me downs from another teacher and I lovingly painted them with leftover paint from my parent's kitchen. The shelves were super heavy and sturdy. So heavy and sturdy, I had to leave them behind when I moved schools!

I moved to a new school in 2008.  I looked, but couldn't find any images of my library.  I think my mantra that year was, "Just keep swimming!" LOL! I switched to a new classroom and grade in 2009.

I decided to line my library under the board for more room. When I set the room up I thought it was a brilliant idea, since the space below the white board seemed wasted. Honestly, I did NOT like this set up.  I found that a bumped against the books when writing on the board and dropped pens and things behind the books.  I am a bit clumsy.

The next year I decided to stack the white shelves (from Walmart and could be rearranged several different ways) and line all the books against my back wall.  I did like that the books were altogether and not blocking the board.  I didn't like that the shelves were so tall, because some of my third graders had a hard time reaching books from the top baskets.

My last year, I think I figure it out! LOL!  These shelves were inherited from another teacher and were awesome.  All wood.  Super heavy and sturdy.  I didn't even have to paint them because they were already black!

The room was a great size.  We made the library a separate area- away from whole group instruction.  The baskets were color coded.  The white ones were fiction, black were nonfiction and blue were poetry. I found a new cozy rug from Target and we had bean bags stacked in the corner.

Side Note: Our of the camera's view is my co-teacher's table.  The library may look blocked off in the pictures, but in reality was in FULL view of a teacher.

I hope you got a few ideas!  It was wonderful to travel down memory lane!

Every day, until September 22nd, a different Primary Peach author will be sharing his or her classroom! Check out the schedule below!

Teaching Tips and Tricks Thursday - Student names

Two weeks. Two WEEKS people!! We've been in school, with students, for two weeks already. It's been an adjustment this time around with other events coinciding with the beginning of school that pulled me away for a day or two. Trying to get into the swing of procedures with my students. So far I'm impressed with them and already see more solid academic skills than in the past.

But that's not what my post is about. I wanted to share some ways to label items in the classroom and ask if y'all do anything different. This way I can tweak my system to be more effective.

I've got student names all over everything in the room. From notebooks to writing workshop boards, I plaster their names everywhere. Which I am more than certain each of you do the same thing!

I usually start with a Tagxedo design with all of their names incorporated into it. The site is easy to use once you know where everything is (psst: Theme refers to the color scheme). You simply pick a shape, type your class list in and hit submit. I like writing their first names three times so that they appear larger than the last names. The students still love looking through it for their names by the end of the year. I post this on the door for the first day of school. It's a great HELLO as they come in each day.
I have a mailbox system for notes that need to go home and for their behavior cards. I have a classroom job called a Filer that places graded papers in the boxes and I don't have to worry about it. Makes it so much easier on me to just stick a stack in the File Box and know they'll take care of it.

I also have their names on large popsicle sticks found at the craft store so they can make their choices fro the Job Chart each week. On Fridays it's someone's job to put the sticks on everyone's desk for Monday morning.

For the Writer's Workshop chart. I have clothespins with their student numbers on them. They move them according to which stage they are on. This is a great way for me to get a class overview right away. I can talk to those friends who have been in the planning stage for way too long and push those in the Rough Drafting stage to find a good spot to end their stories.

For my Behavior Chart we also keep it vague with student numbers so they won't have their names on the "Needs Improvement" section for all to see. We also use student numbers on all of their textbooks and consumables. This way I can reuse them every year.

Okay, your turn. How do you label things in your classroom?

Keeping It Fresh Friday - Planner Fun

It's Friday!  Yay!  It's Meghan from Keeping Up with Mrs.Harris.  This was my first week back at school with kids so I am super excited to see Friday finally arrive!

If you follow my blog, you know that I am a planner nut!  Yep, if you call out "Crazy Planner Lady" I might actually turn around.  It's that bad!!!  Being a teacher, mom, and blogger means that I have to be super organized and I image that organization is at the top of your list as well.  I am going to share with you a little about my planner and a few Etsy shops that have changed the way I plan!
I am always in pursuit of the perfect planner!  I started off with an Erin Condren last summer ($65), changed in January to a Filofax ($75) and now I am currently – this week using a Happy Planner ($25).  I’ve tried several and will probably still try a few more.

As you can see, I love to decorate and glam up my planner!  Stickers are a huge part of that!  A lot of the stickers I have learned to make myself, to find out how click here!  There are still a ton of cute Etsy stores though that I am constantly ordering from.  They are adorable and there are some things that are just better to spend money on than make yourself to stay organized Here are a few of my favs!

At this point, I have a few…ok several favorite Etsy shops.  Here’s my go to list…
·      HelloPretty Planner
·      PineapplePlanner Co
·      AlexStudio
·      Oh HelloStationery Co
·      Lisa VCreations
·      The NiftyStudio
·      CraftyPlanner Addict
·      StationStickers

There are MANY, MANY more shops, but these are my favorite.  Plus, they treat returning customers fantastic with coupon codes or incentives for future orders.

Are you a planner fashionista as well?  Well then you should check out this post about Instagram accounts that you MUST follow.
