Sweet Treats: A Collection of February Goodies

Hello! It's Jonna from The Primary Life and I'm so excited to share some February goodies with you. Here are some Dental Health resources I hope you can use.
This graph is a great way to integrate math and  something that you can actually use all year.

As a kindergarten teacher, everyday I get reports of loose teeth and lost teeth.  It's one of our favorite things to talk about.

This freebie is a great way to for children to learn the effects of certain liquids on their teeth.

All you need is three eggs and cups, milk, soda and water. What a great way to integrate science!

This is a great 3-D interactive book with 10 activities. Click on the link below to get this great item on Teachers Pay Teachers!

Sweet Treats: Synonym Puzzles

Have you enjoyed your month of FREEBIES here on the Primary Peach?  This month has been a lot of fun and full of great ideas and free resources.  I hope you have been sharing them with your friends!  Now it's my turn!  I'm Meghan from Keeping Up with Mrs. Harris.  I have a "Sweet Treat" for you today as well!

February is a short month, but our Winter Break always makes it a little shorter.  I use this month to teach vocabulary due to the short duration of units.  We cover homophones, synonyms, antonyms, etc during this month to expand our vocabulary in our writing and reading.

Synonyms is always a lot of fun to teach during this time, because if your students are like mine, they call synonyms "cinnamons".  It's a great time to bring in cinnamon buns and teach synonyms.  My students always love this as an afternoon treat and it is a great way to start or end this unit.

Today, I have a free center activity that I use with my kiddos.  These are a lot of fun and my students always love puzzles.  Here's a little tip...glue a magnet to the back of each puzzle piece and throw a cookie sheet in the center.  That way the pieces don't move around as much.  Click here to download this center activity.

Sweet Treats: A Fluency Freebie!

A few years ago, I had a group of kiddos who really struggled with reading fluency. I had so many kids working on it as a personal reading goal that I decided to tackle it whole class for awhile.

Best. Decision. Ever. :)

Now, it took a good bit of planning on my part. I spent lots of time on the weekend gathering texts and making it look appealing to my 3rd graders - but I like that stuff. :)

My goal each week was to find 3-4 poems (or short pieces of prose) that students could choose from. This gave me an opportunity to bring in seasonal and high-interest text to my classroom.

The kids chose a new poem each Monday after we read all of the choices aloud together as a class. We were able to build a fluency routine into our everyday Reader's Workshop/Daily 5 Mash-Up, but I'll have to save that for another post. :) However, I will say that throughout the week they had lots of opportunities to practice their poems both inside and outside of school. And, because they chose their pieces each week, they were way more engaged in the practice process than I saw when they were working on our Reading A-Z passages. (Nothing against those - I still use them! I just noticed a BIG difference in their interest in the fluency material.

I'd love to share a set of poems I collected for a week in February. I didn't write any of these poems, but they are published "out there" on the web and I've given credit in the packet where credit is due. I'm working on a few sets of my own poems with a few more bonus features I have up my sleeve. :)

Our theme for this particular week was Presidents' Day, and I actually had a student come back last year and ask for a copy of the "Lincoln Rap" I'm including in this set. She wanted to use it for a speaking and listening project she had and I loved that she remembered it.

This freebie pack also includes a fluency rubric you could use for lots of different speaking and listening activities!

Treats Without the Sweets {FREEBIE}

Hey Friends! It's Theresa from True Life I'm a Teacher!

If you're joining us for the first time...WELCOME! For the month of February we are sharing "Sweet Treats" which involve lots of freebies just for YOU!

Now that we have the pleasantries out of the way...let's get on with the good stuff!!!

Since Valentine's Day falls on a Sunday this year, many classes are exchanging Valentines on Friday, which is just two days away! Yikes! If you haven't made it to the store (#targetrun), I've got you covered. All you need is your printer!

My sweet seconds will be trading cards, goodies, treats, and sweets, but I'm taking a different approach. That is, I'm NOT giving my kiddos candy, but they are going to LOVE {pun intended} the treat I have for them.
Lately, my darlings have been OBSESSED with "fortune tellers" - although, when I was in school we called them "cootie catchers." Regardless of what you call them, they are apparently all the rage right now, and my May drawer - you MAY get it back, you MAY NOT - is filling up with confiscated fortune tellers to prove it.

So, I'm actually going to GIVE my students EACH a fortune teller themed with hearts, flowers, and sweet sentiments.
Fortune tellers are super easy to fold together, and honestly, the folding is part of what makes them so fun! In case you've never made one, or your kiddos have never made one, start by cutting around the edge of fortune teller...you need to start with a square.
Once you've have a square, here's how your fold it:

First, place the square face up, and fold in half. Unfold. Then fold in half again, so that you have created an X.
Next, with the printed side still face down, fold the corners to the center of the paper.
Next, flip the paper over so that the folds/flaps you just made are face down. Now, fold in the corners again, just like you did in picture 4.
Once again, flip the paper over so that the folds/flaps are face down. Fold the paper in half (both vertically and horizontally).
Slide your thumbs and index fingers under the flaps. Voila...Fortune Teller!
You can grab your Valentine's Day fortune teller freebie HERE (or by clicking the picture below)! I included the fortune teller you see in the pictures, as well as one in which you could personalize with your own sweet sentiments.
Be sure to check back each day of February for other sweet treats!

Sweet Treats: Presidential Posters

Hi!  It's Liz from Polka Dot Firsties and I'm happy to be sharing a freebie just in time for President's Day.

I usually end up teaching about President's Day after the Monday holiday.

There is a poster for George Washington, Abraham Lincoln and Barack Obama.

Visit my TpT store to download this for FREE!

Save the Barack Obama poster for the end of the year when the tattling gets a little out of hand.

I had my students write letters to the President if they saw something occur in the classroom that they wanted to tell me about.  I put up the poster of Obama along with these letters.

Most of the letters were your normal tattling....until I got to the one where a student told me someone licked my straw when I wasn't looking.

Basically, these poster can help you teach about presidents AND save your life from infectious diseases. ;)

Sweet Treats: A Love of Regrouping

Hello February and Hello Friends!

It's Erin from The Elementary Darling and today I am thrilled to be sharing a fun math freebie with you all today!

First, I want to share a freebie with you that you can use this week!

We have been regrouping our little hearts out over here! I created this sheet that you can use with basically anything! All you need are some little hearts or other form of Valentine container. I got mine from the Dollar Tree a few years ago, but Target has had come cute containers in the Dollar Spot lately!  You could even just decorate a cute paper bag with a numbered heart! Inside each heart you put a problem. You only need six problems for the center. I used regrouping with addition and subtraction, but you could put any type of problem that you are working on in the hearts. I added a page without the directions for regrouping, so that you can put regular problems in the hearts as well.

Click on the picture below to grab this freebie!

Now, check out this fun idea my sweet firsties did this week!

This was a fun activity my students completed this week. I cut some hearts out. (They loved that.) So easy and simple!
I made three bags
1. Signs (addition and subtraction)
2. Two digit numbers
3. Three digit numbers

This is how I differentiated. Some students took two numbers out of bag 2, some took two numbers out of bag 3, and some students took one number out of bag 2 and one number out of bag 3. This allowed me to challenge some students with three digit, while others just practiced two digits.

The students glued the numbers on and the sign. This helped them practice lining up the numbers in the correct columns.

They had to complete one and get it correct before adding to their heart. They turned out so cute!

Happy Valentine's Day, Friends!
