4th Day of Winter: 4 Science and Social Studies Activities

Ready for some more great ideas?

The Primary Peach gave to meeeeee...

It's Jivey and Valerie, from Georgia Grown Kiddos, here to bring you some science and social studies FUN! First up, Jivey is going to share some things you can do in the upper grades.

SCIENCE: If you teach the weather cycle, this freebie will be great for you! Already taught it? No worries! It will be a great review, and you'll get in some awesome test prep, too. Your kids will be amazed at how snowflakes form and how different each one is, as well as how "Snowflake Bentley" was able to capture these unique crystals on film! Although it's geared for 4th-8th, 3rd-grade teachers, you could do this with some scaffolding and assistance in small groups very easily! You can read more about using this set of paired texts in this post!

SOCIAL STUDIES: Do you love teaching about the American Revolution as much as I do? Then you will LOVE this book! When Washington Crossed the Delaware is a very different kind of Christmas story, as Washington and his men crossed the icy Delaware River to surprise the Hessians:

It has beautiful pictures, as well as real quotes from some of the famous men of the time. You can also provide a little comic relief with this silly Sesame Street skit:

YES EVEN THE BIG KIDS LOVE SESAME STREET! My kids died laughing every year when I showed this!

Now, Valerie is going to share some science and social studies excitement for the young ones!

Hi y'all!  Thanks Jivey for the intro and sharing the day with me!  I have a super exciting activity for anyone, but especially the young ones!  I warn you; I love to make a mess and let the children play with it and get everything they can from the activity.  I saw this yesterday, and it pretty much sums up my approach to the day.

Now, on to the fun!

SCIENCE: I am inspired by Growing A Jeweled Rose to make this "learning experience".  It is Santa Toothpaste. Children can see and feel what happens when 2 or more solutions are combined.

To make Santa toothpaste you will need the following items.  Make sure you read through to the *tips list.

1 cup 6% or higher Hydrogen Peroxide*
1 squeeze dish soap*
desired amount green or red food coloring
desired amount peppermint extract
desired amount glitter, sparkles, fun add-ins
3 Tablespoons yeast*
6 Tablespoons warm water
empty water or similar bottle

*Tips:
  • Dish soap- use a light colored liquid if possible, so the food coloring shows more true color.
  • 6% Hydrogen peroxide is sold in beauty supply stores and pharmacy stores
  • Using regular hydrogen peroxide will work, but it will not be as dramatic of a reaction.  (that is what I used)
  • Use fresh yeast packs.  It will take 3 small packs to make 3 tablespoons
  • Complete the activity somewhere you can spray off (we did ours on the driveway) or can get messy.
Directions:
Combine the following in the water bottle, careful not to shake the bottle,
  • 6% or higher Hydrogen Peroxide*
  • dish soap*
  • green or red food coloring
  • peppermint extract
  • glitter, sparkles, fun add-ins
Once you have combined the solution, gently swirl the ingredients together.

In a separate container, add the warm water and yeast together and mix until there are no lumps in the solution.

Add the yeast solution quickly to the bottle of the first solution.

The reaction is quick so be ready!

SOCIAL STUDIES: Santa needs help!!  You need social studies skill review.  Here is a solution for you both!  Santa is lost and will need the children's help to travel around the world.  This social studies freebie uses the continents and oceans as a way to help Santa find his way around the world. Click on the image below to link to the download.

Make sure to come back tomorrow for three MORE ideas- this time for seasonal writing!

Helpful Harvest: My Storymaker

Welcome back to the Primary Peach and our month-long harvest of great ideas for teachers!

Hi everyone, this is Valerie from Georgia Grown Kiddos.  I am super excited about a great find I get to share with you!!

Today I have a fantabulous website to share with you to help your students create and enjoy their own online story.

The site is My Storyline and students create stories by manipulating the characters and story details within the site.  Check out this short video to see it in action.

Isn't that amazing!!  I love how easy it is to add the characters and actions. You can type in the words too.  I think using it as a publishing tool would be super fun.  The kids can go through the writing process and when they are ready to publish, they can type it into the site and publish it when completed!  This would make for a fun and easy Work on Writing station for center time!!

I hope you utilize this awesome and FREE website.  There are tons of other fabulous tips and tricks to come this month in our Helpful Harvest theme this month.  For even more ideas from The Primary Peach, be sure to follow us on Instagram, Pinterest, and Facebook to catch all the latest news and updates!”

Blessings y'all,
Valerie

Fall Favorites and Freebies: My Mommy Reads Place Value

Hi guys! It's Lyssa from My Mommy Reads! I'm so excited to be sharing one of my favorite fall freebies AND the chance to win a $50 gift card to Amazon or TPT from your friends at The Primary Peach!
Fall is my favorite season. I met my wonderful husband in the fall. Fall reminds me of the fair in my hometown. Fall makes me think of apple picking and pumpkin posing. I can smell the apple cider brewing and the pecan pie baking. (Someone else making both of those of course!) I love Halloween and Thanksgiving, too.

I love all things Fall!
Now to the fall freebie! Place value is a biggie in first grade and representing numbers is a large part of that! After practicing the skill by building numbers with blocks, drawing it with tens and ones, expanding it, and matching it with tens frames-we celebrate!

What better way to celebrate than with Frankenstein?!? Here's how we made this math craftivity work with one teacher and like a billion first graders!

1. I posted a powerpoint on the Smartboard with random numbers to 200. Students built the numbers with tens and ones on their desks. They buddy checked. A friend clicked to the next slide for me.
2. I called them over three at a time to paint their hands. (Everyone else was still building.) Then they washed them. Three kids in the bathroom at a time is better than 50!
3. After everyone had a turn, I assigned their individual numbers and they completed their activity page.
4. The next morning, students cut out their Frank, glued wiggly eyes and added details with Sharpies. Then they glued their little Frank onto the paper.
5. Students then shared their Franks with a partner.
Frankly, these were a BIG hit with my little mathematicians and you can pick up your FREE copy here!

Fall is my absolute favorite season! The weather is starting to get cooler- it's not too hot and not too cold, there is pumpkin iced coffee, fun festivals, fabulous fall fashion, football, and it doesn't hurt that I get to celebrate my birthday!

I love fall so much that I celebrate in AND out of the classroom!

Weekends in the fall are totally meant for fun festivals with your family and fried Twinkies, right!?

One of my ALL TIME favorite activities during the entire year is our Pumpkin Parade! Doesn't that sound like so much fun!?

Students are instructed to turn a pumpkin into their favorite book character and complete a book report. It's a great activity that is completed at home! Then, I invite families into our classroom to view our pumpkins and students put on little presentations. Seriously, this is one of those activities that students still remember at the end of the year!

And, of course I can't forget about this fun fall activity!

This fun, fall freebie is the perfect compliment to the book Spookley the Square Pumpkin by Joe Troiano! It's a simple pumpkin craft that turns into a little book! It also has a writing prompt included!

It also makes the cutest bulletin board display for fall!

And, you can't leave before entering our giveaway! Today is the final day of our first giveaway this month! Enter below to win your choice of a TPT giftcard OR Amazon gift card!

Sneak Peek With a Peach: My Mommy Reads

I am so excited to be sharing my classroom with you! I teach first grade in Marietta and I love it! When I started thinking about my favorite spot in our classroom, I instantly thought about our book spaces.

Confession~I have too many books. I know. Thing is, I am always trying to match a reader with a book. Like the kid who really wanted Mario Brothers books (that was a challenge) and the struggling reader who wanted to learn everything there is to know about gerbils. Yep, gerbils. I consider this a personal challenge and it becomes slightly obsessive! This leads to way too many books, lots of organizing and reorganizing (thank goodness for these first grade helpers!) To manage the madness, I weed through all of the baskets at the end of the year. Students take them home or they are passed on to another teacher. After all, sharing is caring. :)

Let's get to the sneak peak!
Debbie Miller suggests we surround are students with books. Got it! This is one of our book areas. It houses Magic Treehouse, Arthur, Brand New Readers, Seuss, and David Shannon to name a few. They are sorted by series or author and most are leveled on the inside cover. That level is for me, not the readers.

Next up-the reading bench area. This cozy space has the most amazing natural light. Sometimes I have student conferences here just so I can enjoy it! #noshame

Conveniently located next to the bench are two more bookshelves. One has mostly informational books sorted by topic or series and the other has genres, authors, and more.
Heading to the center of the room takes us to more chapter books, biographies, movie favorites, holidays, and more. Last year's class helped me divide the baskets into these groups. They helped me because it was, well, their idea.
My latest addition to the book organization is this beautiful set of shelves from Ikea. I mean, wow, right? I'm in love. I.love.them. My mentor texts live here (when we are not using them) along with my thematic books. They are all out during our units, I promise! It was hard to let my favorites go into their hands for long periods of time, but I did it and I've never looked back!

Guided reading books are on this shelf and across the top. Some of my teacher goodies are here and there as I spend some time here during workshop.

There you have it! I'm so happy with my classroom this year. It has more students, more organization, more books, and more smiles than ever! What's your favorite part of your classroom?
